Self-portrait relief prints

For this project, students were introduced to relief printmaking in the form of a self-portrait. Students were asked to make a line drawing from their photograph which was then transferred to their printing block/stamp. Students carved away everything except their lines after which they had to make 4 prints. Here is a sample of a finished carved stamp.Once all 4 prints were dry, students had to cut them out and add unrealistic colors with colored pencils to each of their prints. Finally they glued all 4 of their prints to a black background. The results are amazing!

Students began this project by learning 6 different oil pastel techniques and making four sketches of animals before starting their final. The final drawing was first completed with at least three different oil pastel techniques and then a final watercolor resist was added to finish the drawing.

Embossed Metal Encaustic

Students learned about and studied Vincent Van Gogh and his landscape paintings paying close attention to the actual textures he created using paint. Students then created four Van Gogh inspired landscape sketches, chose one and drew their final 6"x8" landscape drawing. Before given their final 6"x8" aluminum foil, they experimented on a smaller 4"x6" aluminum piece learning how to emboss the metal and complete the encaustic process. The process looks like this...Students set their 36 gauge aluminum on top of a skillet, set to low, held the metal from sliding with a pencil and added color by melting crayons on top of the metal.and here are some samples of the final embossed metal encaustic landscapes.

Our last drawing from observation project came in the shape of apples. This time the students had an apple on a white piece of paper on their desk to draw from and they had to show three-dimension through cast shadows, highlights and layering their colors.

Drawing what you see and drawing what you think you see are two completely different things and trying to get students to understand the difference takes time. We spent two weeks tackling the difference. We started with learning how to shade, practice drawing cylinders then they practiced and practiced and practiced until they finally completed their final pencil marshmallow drawing and their final white colored pencil marshmallow drawing.

Next week, parent conferences will be held from 1:45-3 p.m.

Scissor Color Wheels

After studying the color wheel extensively, students had to mix the colors on their color wheel using only the three primary colors (red, yellow & blue) using colored pencils.Next the students put together their very own color wheel dictionaries.Finally students made four contour drawing sketches of scissors, chose one for their final drawing and repeated it four times, overlapping it each time on their final 9x12" watercolor paper. Using watercolors, students mixed the colors wherever the shapes overlapped. Resulting in these wonderful studies.

Back to School Backpacks

Students have been drawing contour drawings for several days before they were allowed to start drawing their own backpack or book bag. After completing a side, front and back view of their backpack, they were allowed to start their final drawing. They had to draw a big, contour drawing of their backpack, filling the 12x18" paper. Once completed, they outlined their drawing with a black Sharpie marker. Next they "glued" down bleeding tissue paper to their drawing using a brush and water. They left it to dry overnight and the next day removed the tissue paper, revealing the color on their backpack.

All advanced art students will have two drawings to work on every week in their sketchbook. Drawings are assigned on Mondays and due the following Monday.

The first is their warm up drawing which is worked on during the first five minutes of class every day. If a student is not finished by the end of the week, this classroom website will allow them to finish the drawing up over the weekend.

The second drawing is their homework drawing which is written on the white board every Monday and is also posted here on our classroom website.
Each drawing is worth 25 points towards their scholarly grade.

Today is the first day of school and I want to welcome everyone back to an exciting 2011-2012 school year.

Beginning art classes are offered this year for a semester long class during periods 2, 3, 5 & 6. These classes are mixed 6th, 7th and 8th grade students and will explore drawing, painting, sculpting and mixed medias. The art curriculum is new every year so if a student was in my art class in previous years they will not repeat the same projects.

There is one advanced art class offered this year for a year long course during period 4. This class is mixed 7th & 8th grade students and is based on an application procedure.

Working on the Op art or optical art movement of the 1960's, my beginning art students chose their own optical art to create the illusion of space and movement on a flat piece of paper using color pencils.

relief printmaking

To finish up the printmaking unit, my advanced art students completed a basic relief printmaking technique by making two stamps out of SoftKut. For the first 2x3" stamp or eraser carving the students had to draw flowers and make two prints to turn in. The second, 4x6" stamp had the subject of fish with more background details added as the stamp was twice the size.

Ceramic containers

These quick and easy slab containers are made by using 1/4" slabs (rolled the day before the project), a circle template, basic ceramic tools including a needle tool but paper clips would work. Students cut out their circle shape place the bottom of a small paper cup in the center for a guideline then add radial designs. Once all designs have been added, students simply pick up their clay and drape it upside down over the paper cup and leave to dry overnight. The next day, all paper cups can be removed and the containers turned right side up to dry the rest of the way. Once fired, these were glazed and refired.

introduction to printmaking

A quick and easy introduction to the process of collographs is to have the students complete glue prints, like a relief. All you need is some scrap cardboard, white glue in bottles with a fine tip, printing ink and a few brayers. Once the sketches were done, we transferred the image to the cardboard and the students "drew" their image again with glue and left to dry over night. I set up four different printing stations in the classroom and had the students complete a print on white paper and another on colored paper. Spectacular dragons were the results!

These flower tissue paper collages, completed by my beginning art classes, turned out so great. As always the students had to complete sketches of the flowers before they could choose their final flower to draw big on their final 12x18" paper. Using tissue paper and watered down white glue, the students adhered the "color" to their paper.

My advanced art students were introduced to the idea of drawing in perspective, specifically one point perspective. After introducing the idea of basic squares in perspective, we introduced other geometric shapes and how to make cut outs into the boxes both on the center and edges. These are a few of the many successful finished drawings.

Hidden fish

My beginning art students worked on shading from dark to light evenly with a pencil which is a harder task than it seems. After lots of practice, an introduction to a value scale and sketches of fish, my students were ready to draw their final fish, add lines dividing the paper into shapes and to begin shading in each of those shapes from dark to light evenly.

1 point perspective

Every year we tackle the problem of how to draw three-dimensional objects on a flat piece of paper using perspective. We always start with the basic idea of using one point perspective and simple shapes. We practice drawing boxes for two days before the students can start on the final drawing. For this project we used watercolors to shade in the shapes.

The 8th graders really took a liking to the embossing idea and came up with some great ideas for this project. A highly succesful one each time! We used 32 gauge aluminum (comes in a roll) and colored each project with Sharpies.

Papier mache mania

After two long weeks of starching, starching, some more starching and finally painting, the advanced art students have finished their papier-mache animal sculptures. We started with an upside down plastic bowl, covered it with saran wrap, starched it with at least 10 layers of newspaper, added ears, noses, legs out of newspaper and cardboard, then toppped it off with one layer of white copy paper. Voila! animals galore :)

My eighth grade art students always love creating these optical illusion drawings based on the Op art movement of the 1960's. We study an dlook at artwork from Bridget Riley and Victor Vassarely. A highly succesful project for all students.
